...that fiber optic networks do not provide a speed advantage over traditional wired networks. It's a plain fact that 100Mbps is 100 million bits per second, regardless of the medium that carries it, be it copper wire or fiber optic cable.
There are two main advantages to fiber optic networks. Distance and security.
100BaseTX networks running on Category 5 cable are limited to a maximum wire length of 100 meters (about 330 feet). 100BaseFX networks running on multimode fiber have a maximum cable distance of 412 meters (about 1300 feet) when running in half duplex mode, and a maximum cable distance of 2000 meters (about 6600 feet or 1.25 miles) when running in switched full duplex mode.
