Support Bulletin: 4090 Rev: G

Abstract: This document contains installation instructions for Racore Token Ring adapters for use with Windows 95 and Microsoft and Netware clients. For PCMCIA adapters, use Appendix 1; for 8113 and 8115 adapters, use Appendix 2. This will allow the workstation to make network connections to both Microsoft NT 3.X servers and workstations, Windows for Work Groups 3.X, Windows 3.X, Novell Netware Servers.

Appendix 1: Windows 95 Install Procedure, PCMCIA Adapter

The Racore PCMCIA Token Ring adapter supports the Windows 95 Plug and Play feature. The preceding installation instructions do not apply to this adapter.

A. Rev B and earlier Racore PCMCIA adapters need to be re-flashed for Windows 95 functionality.
You can identify the revision of your adapter by enabling it with the -m switch; when the adapter enables, it will report its revision. Example: DEVICE=PCMDRI.DOS -M.

The program used to re-flash the adapter is named UPD8CIS.EXE. These steps should be followed to ensure proper configuration of the Racore PCMCIA adapter:

Step 1: Boot the machine to DOS. Do not use a CONFIG.SYS, i.e., do not enable the adapter.
Step 2: Run the flash program: UPD8CIS [return]

NOTE: It may be necessary to use a command line switch, see UPD8CIS.DOC.

B. Do not install any adapter driver during the initial installation of Windows 95. Ensure that Windows 95 correctly identified the PCMCIA controller in your notebook (or ISA swap-box) and enabled PCMCIA support. This is evident by the presence of the PCMCIA icon. If the PCMCIA icon is not present, add PCMCIA support via CONTROL PANEL/ADD NEW HARDWARE. You will be given a choice of PCMCIA controllers, i.e., Standard, Cirrus, Vadem, etc. Start with Standard, but it may be necessary to select the controller type that matches your hardware.

C. With the PCMCIA adapter installed, boot Windows 95. Windows 95 will detect the Racore PCMCIA adapter and ask for a driver diskette. During the driver is installation, you will be asked to input a network address. A valid address consists of a unique 12 digit number not used by any other device on the network. Example: 00001a001234.

Appendix 2: Windows 95 Install Procedure, Non-flashed based adapters: 8113 and 8115
Note: Both the 8113 and 8115 Racore Token-ring cards must have their Rom switch option set to disabled before proceeding with the following instructions. If this step is not followed, the card will not function in the Windows 95 environment.

When using the Racore 8113 with Windows 95, these steps must be followed after the driver has been installed.

1. From the network configuration window, highlight the Racore cards and the click on Properties.

2. Click on tab marked Advanced and highlight Network Address, click on Value and input a valid network address (example:40001a001234); it is recommended to use the address printed on the adapter’s address ROM.

3. Click on tab marked Resources, make sure the I/O address, Interrupt, and DMA are correct.

4. Restart machine.

When using Racore 8115 with windows 95 these steps must be followed after the driver has been installed.

1. From the network configuration window, highlight the Racore cards and the click on Properties.

2. Click on tab marked Advanced and highlight Network Address. Click on Value and input a valid network address (example: 40001a001234); it is recommended to use the address printed on the adapter’s address ROM. Next highlight INST8, click on Value and set to 1.

3. Click on tab marked Resources, make sure the I/O address and Interrupt are correct.

4. Restart machine.
